Endothelins are endothelium-derived vasoactive peptides involved in a variety of biological functions. Endothelin-3 is an endogenous neuropeptide and potent vasoconstrictor. Endothelin-3 has been reported to attenuate thrombin-evoked aggregation of human platelets, acts as a potent stimulator of interleukin-6 production by endothelial cell lines, activates phospholipase C in fibroblasts expressing ETA receptors and induces the production of VEGF.
